The New 52

The trade paperback/hardback collections of DC Comics' series following the 2011 continuity reboot that created the "DCnU." This list is cumulative, and thus will extend beyond the initial first 52 trade collections as some series are canceled and others are launched. Miniseries (Huntress, Penguin, The Shade) are welcome as well. Please do not put single issues of any series on this list, only collections.

message 1: by Sam (new)

Sam Quixote Where's "Huntress"?

message 2: by Joshlynn (new)

Joshlynn Well, the Earth 2 version of her is featured in Worlds' Finest with Power Girl, but I'm debating whether to include her solo miniseries or keep this list limited to collections of ongoing titles.

message 3: by Sam (new)

Sam Quixote Omac and Hawk & Dove are both cancelled titles but they’re on the list.

message 4: by Joshlynn (last edited Nov 20, 2012 02:01PM) (new)

Joshlynn Right, but they were part of the official roster of "52" titles whereas the miniseries like My Greatest Adventure, Huntress, The Shade, Penguin, etc. are all tangential to that core list.

NOTE 11/20/12: I have since decided to allow the miniseries despite this earlier comment. - Josh

message 5: by Sam (new)

Sam Quixote Gotcha, I thought Huntress was part of the New 52 – my mistake. But a lot of those Vol 2s on the list haven’t been released yet, have they?

message 6: by Joshlynn (new)

Joshlynn Right. Trying to think ahead.

message 7: by Sam (new)

Sam Quixote I just don't see why people should vote on books that haven't been published yet. Maybe add them when they're published next year.

message 8: by Arron (new)

Arron Hustead There are some miniseries within the New 52 as well, such as Penguin: Pain and Prejudice.

message 9: by Arron (new)

Arron Hustead And I believe Huntress is a part of the Second Wave of the New 52, so Huntress Vol. 1 should come out about the time the second volumes of some of the other series do. A new "wave" occurs every time they cancel a couple of series like they did with Men of War, Static Shock and a few others and replace them wit others. Their goal is to keep the number of main series being published at 52 henceforth. I believe they are on the third wave already in the comics, but the collect editions are just wrapping up the publication on the first wave this month. Volume 2's start being released in January.

message 10: by Sam (new)

Sam Quixote @Arron: That’s really interesting –is there a website where you’re getting this information?

message 11: by Arron (new)

Arron Hustead Some of it I read on wikipedia's New 52 page, so take some of it with a grain of salt. I've also looked through DC Comics release schedule though, which backs up what I've read on wikipedia and there are no New 52 Collected Editions / Graphic Novels set to be released in December. However, there are some Vol. 2's scheduled to be released in January. For instance Green Lantern Vol. 2 and Justice League International Vol. 2 both release on January 2.

message 12: by Arron (new)

Arron Hustead And to correct myself, Huntress has only had a miniseries in the New 52. It was written by Paul Levitz.

message 13: by Arron (new)

Arron Hustead Titles being introduced in the second wave, replacing the cancelled titles (Men of War, OMAC, Static Shock, Hawk and Dove, Mister Terrific and Blackhawks) will be Batman Incorportated, Earth 2, World's Finest (featuring Huntress and Power Girl from Earth 2), The Ravagers, G.I. Combat and Dial H. New additions in the third wave include The Phantom Stranger, Sword of Sorcery, and Team 7.

message 14: by Sam (new)

Sam Quixote Don't know why I didn't think to look up Wikipedia, it has a wealth of information. I think the ones that have been cancelled have deserved it for the most part. Really excited to see Constantine being part of the New 52 and a Superman title with Scott Snyder and Jim Lee helming. Also Dial H by China Mieville looks intriguing and glad to see Huntress getting her own series.

message 15: by Arron (new)

Arron Hustead Oh, and the Court of Owls spin-off Talon is in the third wave as well.

Rumored titles for a 'Fourth wave' are Justice League of America, Katanna, Vibe, Threshold, Constantine, and an as yet untitled Superman spin-off.

So, the way I understand it, the graphic novels / collected editions are going to continuously be a wave or two behind the comics themselves. However, you can already read some of the graphic novels that are yet to be published by collecting all of the different comics that are grouped together and published in the volume sets listed here.

message 16: by Arron (new)

Arron Hustead Yeah, I intend to read all of the sets that come out regardless, but some of them have been pretty bad. I really liked Hawk and Dove and Men of War, but I wasn't sad to see Static Shock or Mister Terrific go at all. OMAC was unique and at times was very good and at times was very bad. I haven't gotten a chance to read Blackhawks yet.

message 17: by Arron (new)

Arron Hustead Stormwatch and the different Legion books (Legion of Super-Heroes, Legion Lost, etc.) have been boggy and boring thus far in my opinion.

message 18: by Arron (new)

Arron Hustead Batwoman and Batwing weren't that great either.

message 19: by Sam (new)

Sam Quixote I read 3 pages of Legion of Super Heroes and put it back on the shelf. Bad mojo. I don't get why people think Batwoman is so great either.

message 20: by Arron (new)

Arron Hustead I toughed it out through both Legion Vol. 1's.

I also wasn't much of a fan of the Animal Man or Swamp Thing storylines in the New 52, nor Firestorm or Frankenstein, either.

message 21: by Mike Briggs (new)

Mike Briggs Not sure why Penguin is on here if Huntress, and Legion: Secret Origin are being kept off. All three being mini-series started after New 52 started.

message 22: by Joshlynn (new)

Joshlynn Noted and remedied.

message 23: by Arron (new)

Arron Hustead Well Mike, I added Penguin because I had read it and voted for it. I hadn't read Huntress Or Legion: Secret Origin, so I didn't vote for them. I guess a book needs votes to appear on the list. And when I looked for the Huntress collection a few weeks ago, it didn't appear on Goodreads, so I couldn't have added it anyway.

message 24: by Mike Briggs (new)

Mike Briggs Thanks. :)

Huntress was on Goodreads at least by October 2 2012, as that was when I read it and added it to my library on here.

message 25: by Arron (new)

Arron Hustead Huh. Curious.

message 26: by Morbus (last edited Dec 13, 2012 04:58PM) (new)

Morbus Iff I could easily see why Penguin wasn't on the list. Yes, it was released during the New 52 launch, but I've never seen anyone refer to it as a New 52 miniseries -- compared to Huntress, which I /have/ seen people refer to as a New 52 addition (same with Shade). There's other "edge" cases too - like Batwoman Volume 1 (of the New 52) directly follows Batwoman Volume 0, and had been deliberately delayed so that it could be a part of the relaunch. As such, I wouldn't complain if Batwoman Volume 0 was added either.

message 27: by Arron (new)

Arron Hustead The Penguin collection release is in the same style of cover as the rest of the New 52 graphic novels.

message 28: by Morbus (last edited Dec 13, 2012 04:57PM) (new)

Morbus Iff Arron wrote: "The Penguin collection release is in the same style of cover as the rest of the New 52 graphic novels." Quite true, but it doesn't actually say the New 52 anywhere on it, AND it contains a backup story from long before the New 52. (Huntress and Shade don't say New 52 either, but at least they don't have not-even-close backup stories added.) EDIT: To be clear, I'm perfectly fine with Penguin on this list. I'm just not surprised why it wasn't here to begin with.

message 29: by Arron (last edited Dec 13, 2012 05:02PM) (new)

Arron Hustead All of the New 52 GN releases have an identical font used for the title on the spine and a square at the top of the spine with a color coding for which part of the universe the title belongs. For example,New 52 Batman comics each have an indigo colored square at the top of the spine.

message 30: by Arron (new)

Arron Hustead Also, several of the New 52 titles tell back stories from before the time of the launch moving forward. For example, Justice League: Origin, Action Comics Vol. 1, and all of the All-Star Western comics.

message 31: by Morbus (last edited Dec 13, 2012 05:34PM) (new)

Morbus Iff Arron wrote: "Also, several of the New 52 titles tell back stories from before the time of the launch moving forward. For example, Justice League: Origin, Action Comics Vol. 1, and all of the All-Star Western c..." That wasn't my point, though. A newly-written New 52 story that details events happening before the standard "five years after the heroes appeared" is in-New-52 chronology. The backup story from Penguin: Pride and Prejudice was actually /written/ years before the New 52 - it wasn't a newly-crafted story that's detailing events earlier in the New 52 timeline.

If they suddenly decided to reprint a number of books using the same New 52 style and square-color (such as, say, The Killing Joke or Knightfall, both of which have been referenced in New 52 stories), or a bunch of the Green Lantern arcs (which have been unchanged in the New 52), would they "belong" on this list? I would say No.

Again, though, we're arguing over nothing - we both agree P:P&P should be here.

message 32: by Arron (last edited Dec 13, 2012 05:37PM) (new)

Arron Hustead Ah, I had no idea when it was written, but it wasn't published before the New 52 launch. It's not like it's a reprint.

message 33: by Joshlynn (new)

Joshlynn My current philosophy with this list is to include books relevant to the new continuity. It's an evolving thing and I'm glad people are discussing it.

message 34: by Morbus (last edited Dec 13, 2012 05:41PM) (new)

Morbus Iff Arron wrote: "Ah, I had no idea when it was written, but it wasn't published before the New 52 launch. It's not like it's a reprint." Not entirely correct. Penguin: Pride and Prejudice (the 5 issue miniseries) was published during New 52, yep! But the backup story (the last story in the volume) IS a reprint, as it was part of Joker's Asylum, published in 2008.

message 35: by Arron (new)

Arron Hustead Good to know.

message 36: by Arron (new)

Arron Hustead Huzzah, just finished Superman, What Price Tomorrow, so I have now read all 52 of the initial wave GN releases.

message 37: by Arron (new)

Arron Hustead The August General in Iron needs his own book.

message 38: by Joshlynn (new)

Joshlynn I wouldn't mind seeing a revival of The Dreaming or Books of Magic, now that Tim Hunter's been reintroduced into continuity.

message 39: by Arron (new)

Arron Hustead Does anybody else think that they've more or less neutered the Green Arrow character? I didn't notice so bad in the Midas Touch, but I just started Triple Threat with a new writer and it just seems way off. Green Arrow is supposed to fight white collar crime and make uber-liberal snarky comments while being a womanizer. It seems like the only part of him they left the same was the womanizer part.

message 40: by Arron (new)

Arron Hustead It still made for a pretty good read, but it doesn't measure up against some of the best Green Arrow books I've read. The three Triple Threat issues seemed kind of shoddy to me, but the issues in China were a fun read though Green Arrow being involved with the supernatural Chinese dead warriors didn't seem to fit the way a Green Arrow story ought to go.

message 41: by Joshlynn (new)

Joshlynn To anyone who's interested, I made another list, this one opinion-based. Go ahead and vote for what tickles your fancy. http://gs-ta.com/list/show/31...

message 42: by Arron (new)

Arron Hustead Batwoman - To Drown the World is SOOOOO much better than Hydrology. Easily the biggest improvement from Volume 1 to Volume 2 so far.

message 43: by Arron (last edited Feb 11, 2013 01:20PM) (new)

Arron Hustead Huge sad news - Geoff Johns is finishing his run with the Green Lantern in May with Green Lantern #20.

message 44: by Arron (last edited Feb 18, 2013 01:44AM) (new)

Arron Hustead A few that have been announced that aren't on the list yet.

- Superman Vol. 2 - Secrets and Lies
- Superboy Vol. 2 - Exscursion
- Teen Titans Vol. 2 - The Culling
- Demon Knights Vol. 2 - The Avalon Trap
- Savage Hawkman Vol. 2 - Wanted

message 45: by Arron (new)

Arron Hustead I'm not really a fan of Stormwatch. The first volume failed to hold my interest for much of it, but I'm digging the interactions with the Red Lanterns in the 2nd volume: Enemies of Earth. "Midnighter to Stormwatch, I've just punched a cat."

message 46: by Deena (last edited Mar 27, 2013 07:24PM) (new)

Morbus Iff Added the massive DC Comics: The New 52 Zero omnibus to the list, which collects all the zero issues released during Zero Month.

message 48: by Morbus (new)

Morbus Iff For Marvel (or agnostic readers), I'm starting a Marvel NOW! list at http://gs-ta.com/list/show/37.... Empty at the moment, but I'll be finishing it up shortly. The two lists link back to each other.

message 49: by Joshlynn (new)

Joshlynn Thank you, Morbus.

message 50: by Arron (new)

Arron Hustead Wow - so, ive finally reached the point where ive read over 100 of these and can no longer vote for every onethat ive read.
